Many women who are finished having children often want to restore the appearance of their body to the way it looked prior to having kids, in order to balance how they look with how they feel on the inside. The term “mommy makeover” traditionally refers to surgical restoration of the breast shape and volume and of the abdominal contour, although it does not have to be limited to those two, additional procedures such as liposuction, arm lift, buttock lift, and thigh lift can also be included in this procedure.
During your consultation for a mommy makeover, Dr. Cohen will carefully listen to your concerns as well as evaluate your medical history, your desires, and your anatomy. The most typical wish of a woman seeking a mommy makeover is restoration of youthful breast appearance and elimination of abdominal skin laxity.
Breast concerns are typically addressed with an evaluation for either a breast augmentation or a breast lift (mastopexy), or a combination of both. Breast augmentation restores fullness and volume, and can be accomplished with either silicone or saline implants, or with your own fat. A breast augmentation by itself may or may not be able to address skin laxity and nipple malposition. If breast augmentation is not enough, then a discussion about a breast lift (mastopexy) may be appropriate. In the right patient, a mastopexy combined with augmentation with your own fat (obtained from liposuction of other areas) may produce the most desirable result.
Abdominal contour concerns are addressed through a procedure known as a tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty. The loose skin in the lower abdomen that results from pregnancy is often impossible to get rid of through diet or exercise. The separation of the abdominal muscles (“abs”) that often results from pregnancy is also impossible to reverse with exercise alone. It is primarily those two anatomic concerns that a tummy tuck aims to correct. This is accomplished by removing the loose skin, restoring the abdominal contour through muscle repair, and creating a new belly button through a new skin opening in the new abdomen.
Additional procedures that can be performed during a mommy makeover include liposuction of various areas, a mid-back lift, and an arm lift (brachioplasty). Additional procedures that can be done later but are not advisable to do at the same time include an inner thigh lift and a buttock lift with or without fat injections.
