BOTOX® & DYSPORT® | Gig Harbor – Tacoma WA
Botox and Dysport are both types of botulinum type A known as neuromodulators that are used primarily for the treatment and prevention of fine lines and wrinkles. Both neuromodulators work by blocking signals from the nerves to the muscles. The injected muscle can’t contract and therefore, the wrinkles relax and soften. The effects of Botox and Dysport begin 2-5 days after injection, with Dysport kicking in slightly faster. Both reach full effect in 2 weeks and last 3-4 months for most people.
Botox and Dysport can be used in many different areas of the face. The most common areas are on the frown lines between the eyebrows, lines on the forehead and crow’s feet at the sides of the eyes. Other areas include top of the nose (bunny lines), lipstick lines (around the mouth), chin (to prevent dimpling), corners around mouth (to prevent downturned mouth), jaw angle (teeth grinding, bruxism, slimming face) as well as in the neck (relaxes prominent neck bands).
Botox and Dysport can also be used for the treatment of excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) in the armpits (axilla) and the palms. Botox/Dysport works by blocking the secretion of the chemical that activates sweat glands. Prior to the treatment, a sweat test is done with iodine and corn starch. Once sweating starts to occur, the area turns purple, allowing the injector to see exactly what area to target. The initial treatment typically lasts 3-6 months and even longer with subsequent treatments (more so in the axilla than the palms).
With the injection of neuromodulators, we relax the movement of the facial muscles and soften the looks of wrinkles, frown lines, and crow’s feet to provide a more youthful appearance. The amount of Botox/Dysport used varies on your individual needs and is discussed during your consultation. One short treatment of a few tiny injections relaxes the muscles that cause the wrinkles for up to four months and no recovery time is needed.
The main differences between Dysport and Botox is that Dysport’s onset of action is a bit faster (2-4 days compared to about 3-5 days for Botox), and the area of diffusion is higher for Dysport. Each unit of Botox is equivalent in result to 2.5 to 3 units of Dysport. This does not imply that one is stronger than the other, but rather their units of measurement just differ.
